On Friday, the Mackenzie Valley Environmental Impact Review Board approved an exploration claim for Drybones Bay.
Well-known ice road trucker Alex Debogorski applied for the project last year.
He wants to drill up to 10 exploration holes in search of diamonds in the area, which is 50 kilometres southeast of Yellowknife.
The Yellowknives Dene maintain the land is sacred to its people, and is extremely concerned that the review board recently pushed the project through to the next approval phase.
In a press release issued late Monday afternoon, the First Nation said the recommendations made by the review board to protect the historic site are not sufficient.
The First Nation added in the release that the board has not demonstrated any previous ability to enforce protection measures once a permit is granted.
