Shear Diamonds had requested an eight-year water licence to cover the recommissioning, operation and ultimate reclamation at the mine the company bought in 2010.
Julie Lassonde, CEO of Shear Diamonds, said in a news release that the decision is a key step on the road to restarting the Jericho mine.
The water board's decision still has to be approved by the minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development. The company expects that decision early in the new year.
In the meantime, Shear plans to continue looking for diamonds in the reject pile at Jericho.
Jericho, which operated from 2006 to 2008, was Nunavut's first diamond mine. It is located 360 kilometres south of Cambridge Bay.
