Northern aboriginal people aren't eating as much ptarmigan stomach, caribou guts or bear liver as their grandparents did, and that might not be a good thing, according to a study.
The study in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics says those foods once provided essential nutrients that the high-fat, high-salt, store-bought foods that replaced them don't.
The result is high rates of obesity, diabetes and cancer across the North.
There are also more deficiencies in vitamins A, B, D and E, and a lack of dietary fibre, calcium and iron.
Sangita Sharma of the University of Alberta is one of the authors of the mammoth, five-year study.
She says her group is working to get healthier foods into the North.
Now, some northern grocers are bringing in whole wheat bread and frozen corn and peas.
The test communities have shown increased levels of vitamins A, D and E, while fibre and folic acid are up and cholesterol is down.
