Aatami had held the post for 14 years.
Tukkiapik has been a board member of the Makivik Corporation for 12 years, and until last night, he was the director general of the Kativik Regional Government in Nunavik.
Now as Makivik president-elect, he says he wants to reach out to people in Nunavik's 14 communities for input on issues like self-governance and Quebec's Plan Nord, a project to develop the province's vast northern region.
"I know it's going to be expensive and funding will have to be found, but in terms of important issues and important decisions to be made, I think we have to do that consultation."
Outgoing President Pita Aatami said he was prepared to accept the people's decision no matter what voters decided, but that it's still disappointing.
Jobie Tukkiapik will take on his new presidential duties next week.
