Hunters to get $1,750 in advance, instead of last year's $400 advance
Polar bear hunters in Canada can get more money in advance this year if they decide to sell their pelts to the Government of Canada's Northwest Territories.
Last year the government paid $400 in advance. This year, it's paying more than four times that at $1,750 a pelt.
Francois Rossouw, the fur manager with the Department of Industry Tourism and Investment, says the government is trying to bring more pelts to auction.
He says hunters have been selling directly to taxidermists and settling for less money because they get paid right away.
Hunters are free to sell where they like, but Rossouw says fur auctions offer the best price.
The territorial government gives hunters all the money from the sale and they also get a $450 bonus if the pelt has been handled well.
The next fur auction is July 7 in North Bay, Ontario.
